UNS C28000 brass, often known as Muntz metal, is a copper-zinc
alloy composed of roughly 60% copper and 40% zinc. It was named
after George F. Muntz, who invented the alloy in the early 1800s.
C28000 brass is corrosion-resistant, machinable, and has high
strength and ductility. Inconel may also be easily linked using
soldering or brazing, making it appropriate for a wide range of
applications.
The bright yellow color of UNS C28000 brass is one of its
distinguishing characteristics, making it an appealing choice for
decorative applications such as jewelry, ornaments, and
architectural embellishments. It is also simple to process and can
be molded, machined, and formed using a variety of techniques,
including casting, extrusion, and forging, making it a versatile
material for a wide range of tasks. Because of its high thermal

Machinability of UNS C28000 Brass
Because UNS C28000 brass is machinable, it can be easily cut,
drilled, and shaped with a number of cutting equipment and
processes. It's also very flexible, which means it can be easily
bent, twisted, and stretched without cracking or breaking.
Weldability of UNS C28000 Brass
UNS C28000 brass is easily welded using various welding processes
such as gas tungsten arc welding (GTAW), gas metal arc welding
(GMAW), and resistance welding.
Corrosion Resistance of UNS C28000 Brass
For usage in less harsh maritime conditions, UNS C28000 brass has
strong atmospheric corrosion resistance as well as good freshwater
corrosion resistance. However, because it is prone to
dezincification, UNS C28000 brass is not recommended for use in
seawater or other highly corrosive conditions. Dezincification is a
corrosion process that selectively removes zinc from brass alloys,
leaving a weaker copper-rich structure that is prone to failure.
Despite its strength and longevity, brass is susceptible to stress
cracking under certain conditions. Stress cracking in UNS C28000
brass can be caused by a number of factors, including corrosive
conditions, high amounts of tensile stress, and fatigue cycles.

compounds, can weaken and shatter brass alloys. Stress cracking can
also be caused by high amounts of tensile stress, such as those

components. Similarly, fatigue cycles (repeated loading and
unloading of brass components) can cause stress cracking over time.
To avoid stress cracking in UNS C28000 brass, it is critical to
carefully analyze the component's use and operating conditions. The
use of corrosion-resistant coatings or inhibitors, as well as the
proper selection of brass alloys, can help reduce the danger of
stress cracking. Avoiding excessive levels of tensile stress and
fatigue cycling will also aid in the prevention of stress cracking
in C28000 brass.
